press info: From January 07 we have a new sub-label called ‘Leftout’ hitting the shelves. The label will be showcasing the up and coming talent we are breeding here at Leftroom, who we believe are the stars of the future. The first release is by Matteo Spedicati of Gumption fame, with his Snowflake EP which includes remixes from Renato Figoli and Massi DL, an all Italian affair!!!
biography: Matteo has always desperately wanted to dj... He never had the money to buy turntables, but he did have a PC. So when his good friend Renato Figoli turned up one day with a cracked copy of Cubase 5, they set about recreating the sounds they were hearing on labels like Kompakt and Perlon. Fast forward five years and their style has matured into a distinctive, infectious blend of house and techno that is helping put Italian dance music back on the map. He currently has an ep out on Gumption, with another scheduled for 2007 and also an ep for Trapez later in the same year. Matteo now has those turntables and his skills as a dj are just as assured as his productions.
He is an increasingly influential player back home and as a result, will soon take up residency at Cagliari’s new Microclub. For Matteo, it’s all about expressing the feelings he has inside, communicating positive vibes and trying to generate in others the intense emotions he first experienced listening to Otis Redding with his father all those years ago.
tracks: First up on the ep we have the fierce ‘Back to Figoli’ which is the perfect introduction to Mateo’s trademark attitude & style. Here is a sun drenched and pacey groover, which rolls along through a 9 minute tech workout.
Now it’s the turn of Massi DL for remix duties. He is a relatively newcomer to the scene, but is going to make a big impact through his first full ep forthcoming on Frankie. The remix is his trademark edgy and bleepy self, and he gives us an intense interpretation that still doesn’t lose sight of the dance floor.
Next up is a firing remix from Matteo’s long time friend Renato Figolii. Also with only a handful of releases to his credit, Figoli has become a name to look out for and this remix reinforces his reputation. Figoli has taken the simple nature of the original and turned it on its side to create what only can be described as minimal tribal. The snappy groove is replaced with an edgy tribal rhythm pattern and the body of the track is twisted into a different vein. Absolute Genius!!!
To close the ep we have another original production from Matteo. This one entitled ‘Fiocco De Neve’ now shows a more subtle side to his work. The trademark elements are kept in terms of pattern and arrangement but this track has a warmer less edgy feel, capturing a continental vibe well.
review: Leftroom Records seems to have decided to expand its artist crew; the sub label Leftout is born, at fact, enabling emerging but talented guys to express themselves, without excluding the chance of a participation on the main label in the near future.
Matteo Spedicati doesn’t shouldn’t be a new name to most us; he recently showed us a great product on Gumption, which gained support from many elite djs, Snowflake Ep. Now he donates us a further musical product better than the last release, demonstrating a positive maturation on his musical experimentation and production style. Matteo has two tracks, with two different styles and shadings:
“Back To Spigoli” is a very funky track, boasting of an optimal melodic rhythm thanks to an addicted bleep, created and used for the occasion.
"Fiocco di neve” instead, explores deeper and introspective atmospheres, hitting the soul of mature listeners. The remixes of Back to Spigoli available on the 12” are made by two Italian talents: Renato Figoli and Massi DL.
Renato Figoli re-edits the track creating a more drummy shading, probably less addicted on the dancefloor but artistically better in its arrangements and its rhythmical structure. The 18 years old Massi DL, young promise of Italian electronic music, joins on Leftroom crew focalising on another interpretation of the same track, more indicated on the dance floor: re-editing the rhythm and evolving the melody he succeeds to boost the track making it a real bomb that will destroy any kind of dance floor.
Our best hope for Leftout, expecting a future even better than the actual great Leftroom
